I feel like a wet seed wild in the hot blind earth.

Hello!
My artwork explores adventure, fear and the presence of unseen burdens. My process involves taking photographs, gathering castoff objects, pressing leaves, and cutting delicate paper: this work with the ephemeral is a means for me to scoop up moments, memories and dreams.
I draw on imagery and scenes from my family's struggles, my multicultural background and my time teaching in the carceral system. I often invokes the imagery of industrial sites, now decayed, that hold a sense of longing, nostalgia and purpose for many people.
I grew up on the outskirts of a city with a violent history hidden behind stunning landmarks-- green ridges, abandoned mine shafts, factories and mansions. The culture of that town wasn't my family's culture. That dissonance leads me to express the disconnection and anxiety, but also the hidden treasures of being an outsider and the warmth of neighborliness. My visual art and photography focuses on the coexistence of sadness and beauty, transforming the ephemeral and the discarded into something seeking transcendence.
I am currently working on a multiyear photo project documenting the relationship between long term illness, the body, and how someone afflicted carries themselves in the world. I am wrapping up a painting project about human incursion into nature, focusing mostly on animals both untamed and domesticated, female subjects, and the dreamlike version of suburbia verging on wilderness. My next visual art project will be illustrating a non-fiction book about family and war.
My last name means of logic, or proof, in Farsi. My relationship with logic, proof and truth-seeking guides my filmmaking, where I look for the documentation of stories, and seek to create that documentation myself. I am currently working on a film about how land use decisions reshaped a community.
Please note, I do not sell my street photography. View my Etsy for available products or contact me below to inquire about prints.
